Proclaimed a mine in 1885, Kromdraai Gold Mine predates the famous 1886 Johannesburg gold rush. Guided tours take visitors on a level, 45-minute walk through original 19th-century horizontal mining tunnels. Inside, you can walk along old coco pan tracks, see period tools and machinery, and learn about the harsh conditions early miners endured. The surface area at Ibis Ridge Farm also features a small historical display, an art gallery, and a trading post. Note: Show-mine operations are mostly run via pre-booked private appointments or specific tour operators, so booking ahead is essential.
