As a school principal, I was excited to bring our learners to the Cradle of Humankind, and overall the experience was enjoyable and educational. Our guide was knowledgeable, engaging, and clearly passionate about the subject matter. The learners thoroughly enjoyed exploring the museum and learning about the fascinating history and discoveries associated with the site. However, I was disappointed that several of the interactive exhibits were not functioning during our visit. One of the highlights for children is being able to engage with hands-on activities, and many learners were eager to interact with these displays only to find that they were not working. This detracted from what could have been a much more immersive learning experience. There was also an area towards the end of the tour where a gentleman was seated behind glass, seemingly demonstrating or creating something, but no explanation was provided to the learners about what he was doing or its significance. The surrounding displays suggested there should have been something to observe or learn from, but there was little context or activity visible. While the museum itself is impressive and the educational content is valuable, the overall experience felt somewhat rushed. Trying to fit everything into approximately an hour meant that towards the end we were moving through exhibits quite quickly, leaving little opportunity for learners to fully engage with the content. I would also suggest reviewing the pricing in the gift shop. Many of the items were quite expensive, making it difficult for children to purchase a small souvenir or keepsake from the visit. In summary, we enjoyed the visit and appreciated the excellent guide and educational value of the museum. However, the number of non-functioning interactive exhibits, the rushed pace, and the expensive gift shop prevented the experience from reaching its full potential.
It is easy to spend a few days in this amazing area, (the caves aren't for the faint hearted) and the marapeng visitor centre is a must, both places are interesting learning all-about our ancestors, there are game drives to be had and balloning.
Had a lovely outing, we went to see the caves, some history, had a laugh at some of the game sections and had some food and snacks. Over all not to bad had a great day, place just needs some maintenance in a few areas but kids are welcome and tend to enjoy it more.
Great experience, been there twice. I must say that due to my lack of patience, I’d rather do the tour myself and read as much as possible.
Wow! What an incredible experience. This hidden gem needs more exposure. I found it by accident on maps and visiting here was a great decision. My kids are 12 & 17 and the interactive museum really intrigued them. We did the guided tour and I advise everyone to. The guide explained everything in detail and provided insight and information that we never had before. Maropeng - return home and experience it for yourself.
